Connect an AI provider

Add your own AI provider API key to a workspace, test it, and pick it for the models an agent uses.

A provider connection is your own API key for an AI vendor, stored in your workspace. Agents that use it run on your provider account and your billing. Without one, agents run on Voicello's shared credentials.

What a connection is for

Every agent uses three kinds of model:

PartWhat it does
Speech to textTurns what the visitor says into text
Language modelDecides what the agent says next
Text to speechSpeaks the agent's reply

Each part runs on a vendor's service. A connection lets one or more of those parts use your own account with that vendor. The connection card shows which parts a vendor can serve.

Your key is checked with the vendor, then encrypted before it is stored. It is never shown again. After that you only see its last four characters.

Add a connection

  1. Open provider connections

Open AI provider connections in your workspace settings and choose Add connection.

If you do not see Add connection, your role cannot manage connections. Ask a workspace admin.

  2. Choose the provider and paste your key

    In Add provider connection:

    • Provider: the vendor the key belongs to.
    • Label (optional): a name that helps you tell two accounts with the same vendor apart, such as "production".
    • API key: the key from your vendor account. The link under the field opens the vendor's page for creating one.
  3. Connect

Choose Connect provider. Voicello checks the key with the vendor before saving it. If the vendor refuses the key, the dialog says why and nothing is saved.

A saved connection shows as a card with the vendor's name, the last four characters of the key, and Verified with the date of the check.

Test a connection

Keys stop working when they are revoked or when the vendor account runs out of credit. To check one, open the menu with the three dots on its card and choose Test connection. The line at the bottom of the card shows the result.

The same menu has the other actions:

  • Replace key swaps in a new key. Agents that use the connection keep pointing at it, so you do not have to pick it again.
  • Disable turns the connection off without deleting it. Enable turns it back on.
  • Delete removes it.

A connection that an agent still uses cannot be disabled or deleted. Voicello names the agents that use it, as far as you have access to them. If it says other agents you do not have access to also use the connection, ask a workspace admin to move those. Open each agent it names, set Credentials to another connection or to Platform default, then try again. If the agent is listed with "published version", publish it again as well, because live conversations run the published version.

The same key cannot be saved twice for one vendor in a workspace. If you paste a key you already saved, the dialog names the connection that holds it.

Use a connection for an agent

A connection does nothing until an agent is told to use it.

  1. Open the agent's models

Open the agent from your voice agents, open the agent's menu and choose Models.

  2. Pick the connection under Credentials

There is one card each for Speech to text, Language model and Text to speech. On a card, choose the Provider and Model, then set Credentials to your connection in place of Platform default.

A connection that cannot be used for that part is listed but cannot be picked, and the list says why.

  3. Publish the change

Your choice is saved as you make it. To use it for live conversations, publish the agent again. See Create your first agent.

To go back to shared credentials, set Credentials to Platform default.
